A mountain rescue team in northe Italy on Wednesday found six people, dressed in jeans and gym shoes, attempting to cross a snow-covered pass in freezing temperatures. It was one of several such incidents in recent months, according to rescuers, who say the situation has reached “emergency level”. On Wednesday afteoon, members of CNSAS Piemonte – a voluntary mountain rescue organization in Piedmont – reached the group of six just below the Colle della Scala, an Alpine pass that connects north-west Italy with France, after they had walked for several kilometres in the snow. “They were visibly cold and poorly equipped, but they didn’t want to tu back so close to their final destination,” CNSAS said in a Facebook post. The rescuers offered to take the migrants, all said to be of African origin, back to the town of Bardonecchia, but they refused. “We told them every way we could that they were risking their lives by continuing – they were in gym shoes and tracksuits and were completely soaked,” one rescuer told La Repubblica. Local man Michele Bordoni, 27, injured three people when he crashed a Toyota Yaris in a pedestrian zone in central Sondrio on Saturday afteoon. “I should have killed more of them,” Bordoni reportedly said as he was arrested. Prosecutors are preparing to charge him with attempting to “indiscriminately kill a number of people”, as well as assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest, according to papers filed on Monday. Bordoni, who was initially hospitalized before he was taken to prison on Sunday, is believed to have been under the influence of alcohol and possibly drugs at the time of the attack. He crashed the car into a pillar near Sondrino’s central square before attempting to flee the scene on foot. One woman was thrown onto an ice rink set up as part of the town’s Christmas market. Italy's competition watchdog on Monday initiated non-compliance proceedings against Ryanair that could see the airline fined up to €5 million ($6 million) over its recent waves of cancellations. The procedure was launched after Ryanair ignored an order to update its website and standard emails to ensure Italian customers were made fully aware of their rights to re-booking, re-routing and compensation in the case of flights being cancelled, the Antitrust regulator said in a statement.
