Someone stole Naples' Christmas tree within 24 hours

  • A Christmas tree lasted just 24 hours in Naples' most famous shopping arcade before someone stole it. By Friday moing, only a few branches, some baubles and a stump remained of the tree installed the day before in the Galleria Umberto I.  The thieves had removed the rest of the metres-high tree, decorations and all. Photos show a clean cut, suggested that the culprits may have been equipped with a chainsaw. The tree had been donated to the glass-roofed arcade by the Gran Caffè Gambrinus, one of Naples' oldest establishments, just the day before. It was "a present for Naples", the café said in a video inaugurating the decorations. It's not the first time that the Galleria Umberto has had its Christmas tree stolen, but this is believed to be a record for the shortest time a tree has lasted, according to Ansa.  In previous years police have found stolen trees – or bits of them – in the city's dense Spanish Quarters, waiting to be used in the traditional bonfires that Neapolitans lights around January 17th to celebrate Sant'Antonio Abate.  In 2015, a gang of youths got as far as stripping the arcade's tree of decorations and dra, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Meredith Kercher's convicted killer gets 36 hours of freedom

  • Rudy Guede has been granted 36 hours temporary release from prison. Photo: Tiziana Fabi/The LocalRudy Guede, the man currently serving a 16-year jail sentence for the 2008 murder of 21 year old British exchange student Meredith Kercher, has been given 36 hours of temporary release from prison as a reward for good behaviour. It is thought that Guede will leave Viterbo's Mammagialla prison on Wednesday moing before retuing to his cell on Friday evening. The decision was made by a probate court in Rome, which overtued an initial decision by a court in Viterbo blocking the 29-year-old's release. “I will be able to feel the sun on my skin and be able to look out of the window without bars in front of my eyes,” La Repubblica reported Guede as saying after the ruling. “Thirty-six hours, each one of them precious – I thank everybody who has had faith in me,” he added. Guede is the only person to have been definitely convicted for Kercher's murder following the conviction, acquittal, re-conviction and eventual definitive acquittal of American Amanda Knox and her former boyfriend, Rafaelle Sollecito. Guede, who arrived in Italy from the Ivory Coast when he was five, has consistently denied playing any part in the murder and claims to have been a scapegoat. Story continues below… But Knox, whose case over rights violations she allegedly suffered at the hands of Italian authorities during the investigation into the murder, was last week accepted by the European Court of Human Rights, told La Repubblica: "I'm upset by the fact that Guede has never shown any remorse and hope that whoever granted him permission [to take temporary release] did so only as part of a social reintegration programme." Guede has already served eight years in jail for the murder and will be eligible for parole in 2018.   Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب
