  • Gualtiero Marchesi (L) died in Milan on Tuesday. Photo: Marco/Flickr AFP [email protected] @thelocalitaly 27 December 2017 08:35 CET+01:00 Italian chef Gualtiero Marchesi, widely considered the father of the country's nouvelle cuisine, died on Tuesday in his native city of Milan at the age of 87, local media said. Marchesi ran the restaurant "Marchesino", located in the heart of Milan on the prestigious Piazza della Scala. After studying in Italy, Switzerland and France, Marchesi opened his first restaurant in Milan in 1977, which eight years later went on to be awarded three coveted Michelin stars -- the first Italian establishment to do so. On the back of this success, he opened kitchens and cafes in Italy, France and Japan. • Car ban in place as northern Italian cities fight smog

  • Traffic restrictions are in place in parts of northe Italy in a bid to combat high levels of air pollution. A daytime traffic ban in Turin, where safe limits have been surpassed for 15 consecutive days, has been extended to include Euro 5 diesel cars despite rain being forecast. A similar initiative was imposed in October, when pollution values broke the limit for several days. Restrictions on Euro 4 cars are in place in Milan, where the pollution rate has also broken the legal limit, and other parts of Lombardy, excluding Como, while 85 municipalities across Veneto have traffic limitations in place. Dozens of Italian cities are in the air pollution danger zone, with 25 exceeding the EU’s standards for air quality by mid-October, according to a report by Legambiente, the environmental organisation. EU standards specify that cities should have no more than 35 days of poor air quality – when levels of PM10 pollution exceed 50 micrograms per cubic metre of air – per year. Turin had 66 days of poor quality air between January and mid-October, followed by Cremona with 58 and Padova with 53. Venice had 52 and Milan 50 during the same period. &#, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Ambulance driver suspected of killing patients to make money from their funerals

  • File photo of a police car outside a Milan hospital. Photo: Giuseppe Cacace/AFP Police in Sicily have arrested an ambulance driver suspected of killing at least three patients in order to make money from their funerals. The deaths took place while terminally ill patients were being driven to their family homes from hospital in the Sicilian town of Biancavilla. The scheme had reportedly been going on since 2012, and the 'Ambulance of death' operation, as it was named by investigators, has looked at over 50 deaths in the area to establish whether any could have been homicides. Of these, 12 were considered "particularly meaningful" to the operation, the Catania deputy prosecutor told a press conference, but only three were presented to the investigating magistrate as evidence. The magistrate issued an arrest order for the 42-year-old driver, who is suspected of voluntary homicide aggravated by the alleged mafia involvement. • How far-right parties are faring across Europe

  • Demonstrators in Vienna hold posters reading "Nazis out of parliament" ahead of Austrian elections. Photo: Alex Halada/AFP Austria's hard-right Freedom Party has a shot at sharing power after elections on Sunday, having narrowly lost out in a presidential vote last year. A far-right party has also had some success in Germany, in September becoming the first such party to enter the Bundestag since the end of World War II, but their counterpart in France is faring less well. Here is a snapshot of some of the far-right parties in Europe. Austria The eurosceptic and anti-immigrant Freedom Party (FPOe) came close to winning the presidency in December, which would have made its leader the European Union's first far-right president. One of Europe's most established nationalist parties, it is forecast to come second or third in this weekend's vote and could become junior coalition partners to the favourites, the conservative People's Party (OeVP). Founded in 1956 by ex-Nazis, the party eaed a stunning second place in 1999 elections with nearly 27 percent. Last year its candidate Norbert Hofer narrowly lost a presidential runoff against Greens-backed economics professor Alexander Van der Bellen. Germany The openly anti-immigration and Islamophobic Alteative for Germany (AfD) is the third-biggest party in the Bundestag after the September election, a political earthquake for post-war Germany. The party took nearly 13 percent of the votes, having, ...ادامه مطلب
