Giuseppe Albano, curator of a central Rome museum dedicated to the British romantic poets, John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley, was found dead on Monday.
The 39-year-old curator is believed to have committed suicide at his apartment inside the Keats-Shelley Memorial House museum, which looks out onto the Spanish Steps, Il Messaggero reported.
His death is not being treated as suspicious.
Bo in Scotland to a Scottish mother and Italian father, Albano had been curating the museum - which houses the largest collection of Keats memorabilia in the world - since 2012.
Before becoming museum director, Albano completed a Phd in English Literature at the University of Cambridge before going on to work as an undergraduate tutor at Edinburgh University.
He also did a stint as an English literature teacher in Addiewell maximum security prison between Glasgow and Edinburgh.
The Keats-Shelley Memorial House, opened in 1909, occupies the home where English poet John Keats lived for the final year of his life while suffering from tuberculosis.
The museum is dedicated to the life and work of Keats and his fellow British poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley, who also died in Italy, drowning off the coast of Tuscany in 1822.
