Over 400 migrants reportedly drowned while trying to make their way to Italy from Egypt after the four vessels they were travelling in capsized.
The majority of the migrants were from Somalia, with others coming from Eritrea and Ethiophia.
The news was broken on Sunday night by BBC Arabic, citing the Somali Ambassador to Egypt.
Rescuers were reportedly able to save just 29 people.
The tragedy comes exactly a year after more than 700 migrants drowned in a shipwreck off Sicily.
