The emergency on the DL44 flight was declared due to a technical problem, Il Messaggero reported.

The jet, which left New York's JFK at 8.41pm EDT on Tuesday after a 40-minute delay, landed safely at 10.33am at Rome's Fiumicino airport.

A spokesperson for Delta could not be reached for comment when contacted by The Local.
