They say love conquers all, but no amount of red roses or free diers were able to woo the ex girlfriend of a romantic Italian man, who is now on trial in Turin for stalking.

Apart from treating her to her favourite meal of chicken and chips, the 70-year-old man, from Turin, also took his ex’s car to the garage when it broke down.

The pair had been together for 20 years and all he wanted was to win back her love.

Instead, he is on trial for stalking because his outpouring of love and generosity were unwanted.

In fact, the woman gave the 50 red roses to a passerby.

“If you condemn this man, then you condemn love,” his lawyer, Antonio Genovese, said in court, La Stampa reported.

The reason why the man is standing trial is because Italy’s highest court, the Court of Cassation, holds that two unwanted phone calls are enough to bring charges for stalking.

“But in this case, there was no stalking,” argued Genovese.

“And my client did not think he was stalking.”

A ruling is expected on September 14th.

The pair had known each other since 1992 and often bump into each other in town, “making it hard for him to say goodbye”, Genovese said.
